Maruti Suzuki To Launch Punch Rival Next Year

GaadiWaadi -
Maruti Suzuki’s new micro-SUV to compete with the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter and could be differentiated with lower price and more reliability
Launched in October 2021, the Tata Punch has accumulated over 8 lakh units in cumulative sales. Its success has not gone unnoticed by the industry, especially other mass-market brands already present in the A-segment. Maruti Suzuki, for one, plans to launch a new Tata Punch rival in 2027.
Maruti Suzuki may have been an early mover in the micro-SUV segment with the Ignis, which it launched in January 2017, but it did not see much demand for this model. The company axed it in early 2026 and has started developing a more competitive model. Internally known by the codename ‘Maruti Y43’, the new Tata Punch rival is likely to be designed from the ground up and could be based on a new platform.
The Maruti Y43 could be inspired by one of Suzuki’s kei cars designed for Japan. In August, a purported test mule of this model was spied at Maruti Suzuki’s new plant in Kharkhoda, Haryana, and while this was only a hazy aerial view, the shape of the vehicle did remind us of those tiny kei cars. The spy shots that circulated from this sighting indicated a squarish shape, a high-set, flattish bonnet, and an upright nose.

Where the Maruti Y43 would certainly differ from Suzuki’s kei cars would be ground clearance. It is likely to sit much higher, as demanded by Indian road conditions. Maruti Suzuki could be planning to offer a ground clearance of around 190 mm, which would be pretty impressive for an A-segment car. We also expect the company to offer 16-inch alloy wheels.
Features like a sunroof, ventilated front seats, a wireless smartphone charger, higher-power USB Type-C ports with an output of over 50 watts, cruise control, and an automatic climate control system are also likely to be seen in the Maruti Y43. On the safety front, we expect features like LED front fog lamps, six airbags, and a 360-degree camera system.

Maruti Suzuki could offer the Y43 with its new Z12E 1.2-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine in petrol and petrol-CNG variants, both with a choice of 5-speed manual and 5-speed automated manual transmissions. The Z12E engine will likely produce 82 hp and 112.4 Nm of torque running on petrol and 69 hp and 101.8 Nm of torque running on CNG. The company could be considering offering its upcoming series-hybrid system based on this engine as well, albeit at a later stage.
