At North Sydney Oval on November 8, 2026, Sydney Sixers Women defeated Sydney Thunder Women in the 15th match of the Women's Big Bash League 2026-27 season, completing a hard-fought derby victory in a rain-affected contest. The Sixers posted 162 for 2 in their 16 overs before dismissing the Thunder for 158 in 15.3 overs to seal the win by nine runs.

Sixers captain Ashleigh Gardner was the standout with the bat, striking 64 not out from just 25 deliveries, including 5 fours and 5 sixes. She reached her half-century off 18 balls, a knock that featured 5 fours and 4 sixes to that point, and continued to accelerate through the closing overs. Ellyse Perry complemented Gardner at the other end, finishing unbeaten on 59 from 41 balls with 11 fours, having brought up her own fifty off 38 deliveries with 9 fours.

Rain interrupted the Thunder's chase at 9.0 overs with the score at 55 for 1, adding an extra layer of uncertainty to the contest before play resumed.

How did the Sixers build their total despite an early setback?

The Sixers' innings did not begin smoothly. Thunder were tight with their bowling, leaving the team in pink at 27 for 1 at the end of the four-over powerplay. Perry and Melie Kerr looked to rebuild the innings, but Kerr was unable to get going and finally was retired out at 14 off 17 balls, with the score at 65 for 2.

In walked Ashleigh Gardner in the ninth over, and the Sixers skipper began taking the attack to the Thunder bowlers. The Sixers reached 100 in 12.1 overs and then accelerated to 150 by the 15.2-over mark, eventually finishing on 162 for 2 from their allotted 16 overs. Gardner reached her half-century off just 18 balls, which became the joint-second fastest half-century in WBBL history. Perry and Gardner put on an unbeaten stand of 97 runs from just 39 balls.

How did Thunder's run chase unfold against the Sixers?

The Thunder's reply was eventful from the outset, chasing a revised target of 168 from 16 overs. They reached 50 in 6.2 overs but had slipped to 56 for 4 by the 7.3-over mark, losing wickets in a cluster that put the chase under pressure. After the rain break, the Thunder collected 46 runs in the second powerplay without losing a wicket, keeping themselves in contention.

Nadine de Klerk and Laura Harris launched a counterattack that briefly threatened to turn the match. The pair added 52 runs in 65 balls, with Harris contributing 35 from 8 balls in that stand and de Klerk adding 15 from 7 balls. The Thunder reached 100 in 9.5 overs, but the Sixers held firm in the closing stages. The Thunder were eventually dismissed for 158 in 15.3 overs, falling four runs short of the target and handing the Sixers the derby victory. Teenage seamer Caoimhe Bray was the pick of the bowlers, taking figures of 4 for 28 from four overs.
